Give Flavor and Shine Out Through Words and Action! Following upon the teaching of the Beatitudes, Jesus uses metaphors of salt and light to describe the life of discipleship. And in today’s Gospel Jesus turns to his disciples and say to them, ‘You are the salt of the earth’ and ‘You are the light of the world.’ It powerfully states our mission as Church and as Christians. Salt only produces its effects when it is totally merged with the food. It is indistinguishable from the rest of the food, but its presence or absence is very obvious. The Christian, too, can only be truly effective when he or she is fully a member of society and, at the same time, gives an unmistakable taste to that society. Salt is also used as a preservative, and as a healing agent. Christians then, by their Gospel-centered lives, are to give a distinctive taste to society. Those who rally have the spirit of the Beatitudes will permeate the world, renew it, and retard its social and moral decay. It is striking that a title that is given to Jesus in the Gospel of John – ‘light of the world’ – is given to us, his disciples in Matthew’s gospel. If salt is associated with flavoring, light is associated with showing the way. We are addressed as the light, because we are called to show each other the way, the way of Christ. It is the way that is spelt out in the Beatitudes. Our commitment to social justice flows from the exhortation that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel. Some of the activities that this commitment leads us to are given more concrete expression as the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, console those who mourn, and so on, we show ourselves to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. When we do these things with the community of faith, the Church, we are indeed acting as “a city set on a mountain” that cannot be hidden! God bless you! Fr. Romesh Lowe OMI |

St Joseph’s is a beautiful church. At the tender age of 92, she is getting even more beautiful.
For 7 years now, I have always wanted to have a mosaic of The Divine Mercy to replace the simple print we had. However, we have had lots more pressing, practical, and very expensive projects to do first. Now, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Ms Sarajane Brittis, we have the mosaic, given in honor of her parents, Dr Anthony & Marianna Brittis. The mosaic was lovingly handcrafted in Italy—just outside Venice-- over the last 6 months and was just installed last Friday. How blessed we are! Generations to come will be able to pray before this sacred reminder of God’s infinite mercy. From all of us at St Joseph’s, “THANK YOU”, Ms Brittis!
